3D Animation – an Infographic

I remembered the excitement when going to Disneyland for the first time. This was different from normal theme parks, as a lot of things inside it was so familiar to me. Most people grew up with animation, the characters and stories that really touch them, they would remember. And Disney is not short of stories that inspire many. This is why I am using the theme of Disneyland to represent my infographic about animation in particular 3D. Currently, Disney dominates the 3D animation industry so Disneyland would be a great representation. Maps are also already a form of infographic in itself. From the picture above I find it clearer to read than most of the current Disneyland maps. This is due to the map not being super crowded and different colours that clearly segments each of the ‘lands’.

Sketches

My previous idea was just a poster with icons that would give information on the different categories I have segmented for the data. However the 2nd idea, which stems a bit from the previous assessments would have a map of a ‘3D land’ and each of the lands would represent that category. This idea would fit perfectly with animation as the audience would be familiar with the theme of the whole infographic.

Clear silhouettes of each of the categories. The castle would represent the current era of 3D animation which is dominated by Disney, the city would represent facts of different 3D companies in the industry and the factory would represent the technical process of creating a 3D animated film. The prehistoric section would represent early and origins of 3D animation and the arcade would represent the comparisons between 3D, 2D and the future of animation.

I decided to create a character that would act as a guide and part of the world. Having a character can create a connection and representation of animation affecting youth a lot. The girl shows a clear representation of theme parks'(especially Disneyland) target audience.

While designing the character and trying silhouettes I decided to go with a big head and small body that will enhance on the character being young.

Some sketches of each ‘Land’

Overall, layout wise it was simpler to do after I knew what the assets that were going to be in each infographic were.

Finally done, although there were some issues with animation in an interactive PDF. 🙂
